CAF President Patrice Motsepe has expressed profound sorrow over the death of Issa Hayatou, the former long-serving president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Hayatou, who passed away at the age of 77, led CAF for an impressive 29 years, from 1988 to 2017, and played a significant role in shaping the landscape of African and global football.

Hayatou’s influence extended beyond the African continent, as he was also a prominent figure within FIFA.

He served on FIFA’s Council from 1990 to 2017 and temporarily held the position of FIFA’s acting president from 2015 to 2016, following the suspension of Sepp Blatter.

His leadership and vision left an indelible mark on the world of football, making him one of the most influential figures in the sport.

In a heartfelt statement, Motsepe conveyed his deep condolences on behalf of the CAF community. “I extend my deepest condolences, as well as those of the 54 CAF member associations, following the death of former CAF President, Mr. Issa Hayatou.

Our thoughts are with his family, the Cameroon Football Federation, its President Samuel Eto’o, and all the Cameroonian people,” Motsepe said.

Motsepe went on to highlight Hayatou’s enduring legacy, emphasizing the transformative impact he had on African football.

“CAF and African football will remain eternally grateful to President Hayatou for his immense contribution to the development and growth of football in Africa.

He will forever remain in our hearts and memories,” he added.

Hayatou’s tenure at CAF was marked by significant milestones, including the expansion of the Africa Cup of Nations and the successful hosting of multiple editions of the tournament across the continent.

His leadership was instrumental in enhancing the visibility and competitiveness of African football on the global stage, earning him widespread respect and admiration.

Under Hayatou’s guidance, CAF experienced unprecedented growth, and African teams began to make their mark in international competitions.

His efforts to improve infrastructure, promote youth development, and ensure fair play were pivotal in raising the standard of football across Africa.

As the football world mourns the loss of Issa Hayatou, tributes have poured in from across the globe, recognizing his dedication and passion for the sport.

His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of football leaders and players in Africa and beyond.

Hayatou’s passing marks the end of an era for African football, but his contributions will be remembered for generations to come.

The outpouring of respect and admiration from football officials, players, and fans alike is a testament to the profound impact he had on the sport.
