France captain reflects on painful exit following 2-0 loss to Spain

France captain Kylian Mbappé has admitted his disappointment after Les Bleus’ hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup final ended with a 2-0 defeat to Spain in Dallas.

The loss brought France’s campaign to a close at the semi-final stage, denying the 2018 world champions the chance to compete for another global title after also reaching the final in 2022.

Speaking after the match, the Real Madrid forward said the result was difficult for both the players and the nation to accept.

“Like everyone else, I’m very disappointed. It was a dream for us to reach the final, to give our country this opportunity to continue dreaming and to make history. Now, it’s something we have to face with our heads held high.”

Mbappé’s comments reflected the mood within the French camp after their tournament came to an end against a Spanish side that secured a place in Sunday’s final.

France captain looks ahead after painful defeat

Although visibly disappointed, Mbappé acknowledged that the team must quickly come to terms with the setback and prepare for what comes next.

The France captain admitted that the emotions following the defeat made it difficult to fully express his feelings but stressed the importance of moving forward.

“I don’t think I can quite put into words how disappointed the team and I are. But like any top-level player, even if it sounds a bit robotic, we’ll have to pick ourselves up, go on vacation, and move on. Because football doesn’t wait for anyone, we’ll have to learn and start again to put this failure behind us.”

France entered the tournament hoping to reach another World Cup final after lifting the trophy in 2018 and finishing as runners-up four years later.

However, their journey ended in Dallas as Spain produced the performance needed to book a place in the final.

One final match remains

Despite missing out on the World Cup final, France still have one fixture left to play before ending their campaign.

Didier Deschamps’ side will face the loser of the second semi-final between Argentina and England in the third-place play-off on Saturday.

The match offers Les Bleus an opportunity to finish the tournament with a victory, even though the disappointment of falling short of another World Cup final remains fresh.

For Mbappé, the defeat represented the end of a campaign that had promised much but ultimately finished one step away from the biggest match in international football.

His post-match reaction underlined both the frustration of the players and their determination to recover from the setback.

While the loss to Spain ended France’s hopes of competing for the trophy, the captain insisted the team must learn from the experience and look ahead to future challenges.

With one match still to come, France will now aim to conclude their World Cup campaign on a positive note before turning their attention to the next chapter.
