Ronald Koeman has stepped down as Netherlands head coach following his side’s dramatic elimination by Morocco in the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup, bringing an end to his second spell in charge of the Dutch national team.

The announcement came a day after the Oranje were knocked out on penalties, with three missed spot-kicks proving decisive in a 3-2 shootout defeat after the match had finished 1-1.

The result ended the Netherlands’ hopes of progressing further in the tournament and prompted Koeman to leave his role.

The former Netherlands defender confirmed his decision in a statement posted on Instagram, explaining that he had chosen to resign on Monday evening.

Having returned as national team coach in 2023, Koeman now ends his second tenure in charge after previously managing the Oranje between 2018 and 2020.

Koeman accepts responsibility

In comments reported by RFI Sports, Koeman admitted the disappointment of seeing the Netherlands fall short of their ambitions and accepted responsibility for the team’s early exit.

“We all shared the dream of making history at this World Cup, but we failed.”

He continued by acknowledging the pain of the defeat, adding that no one was more disappointed than he was.

Koeman’s resignation follows the Netherlands’ failure to convert their strong group-stage form into success in the knockout rounds.

Strong group campaign ends in heartbreak

The Dutch had progressed to the knockout stage after finishing first in Group F.

Their campaign began with a 2-2 draw against Japan before they recorded an emphatic 5-1 victory over Sweden.

They then secured top spot in the group with a 3-1 win against Tunisia, entering the round of 32 with confidence.

However, their World Cup journey came to an abrupt end against Morocco in Monterrey.

Late equaliser forces penalties

The Netherlands appeared to be on course for victory after Cody Gakpo gave them the lead from a swift counter-attack.

The move began with a pass from Crysencio Summerville, who was then brought down inside the penalty area.

Morocco continued to push forward in search of an equaliser and found one deep into stoppage time when Issa Diop scored in the 90+1 minute to make it 1-1.

The match was ultimately decided by a penalty shootout, where Morocco held their nerve to claim a 3-2 victory after three Dutch players failed to convert from the spot.

End of Koeman’s second spell

Koeman’s resignation closes another chapter in his association with the Netherlands national team.

After returning to the role in 2023, he guided the Oranje to the top of their World Cup group but was unable to take them beyond the first knockout round.

The defeat to Morocco marked the end of the Netherlands’ campaign and brought Koeman’s second spell as head coach to a close.
