World Cup 2026: Ronaldo Nazario warns Brazil over potential Netherlands showdown
Brazil legend Ronaldo Nazario has expressed concern about a possible knockout-stage meeting with the Netherlands, admitting he does not believe the Selecao are ready for such a test at this stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The two-time World Cup winner believes Brazil are still a work in progress under coach Carlo Ancelotti despite making a solid start to their campaign.
“We have to avoid Holland, because it’s still too soon. I don’t think we’re ready for that clash yet,” Ronaldo said.
The former striker, who led Brazil to World Cup glory in 2002, remains optimistic about the team’s prospects but feels they need more time to develop as the tournament progresses.
“I think we’ll evolve as the tournament goes on. We’re going to improve, but we’re not ready yet. Japan and Sweden are teams we can get past without much trouble,” he added.
Ronaldo’s comments come as Brazil continue their preparations for the final round of Group C matches. The South Americans opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Morocco before defeating Haiti 3-0, putting themselves in a strong position to reach the Round of 32.
While Brazil remain among the favourites to lift the trophy, Ronaldo’s assessment reflects the growing respect for a Netherlands side that has impressed throughout the tournament. The Dutch have emerged as one of the standout teams of the group stage and are widely regarded as genuine contenders for the title.
Brazil have also received a timely boost ahead of the knockout rounds, with Neymar returning to fitness after missing the opening matches through injury. Coach Ancelotti recently confirmed the forward is available again, providing additional firepower as the tournament enters its decisive stages.
Despite Ronaldo’s caution, he has previously backed Ancelotti to fine-tune the details needed for Brazil to challenge for World Cup glory, praising the talent available within the current squad.
For now, however, the Brazilian icon believes the Selecao should focus on building momentum and avoiding what he sees as one of the most dangerous opponents still left in the competition.
