Ivory Coast international Yan Diomande endured a difficult first start for Real Madrid as Spanish media questioned his influence during the 4-1 victory over Rayo Vallecano.

Diomande was handed his first start for the Spanish giants but failed to make a significant impact during his 75 minutes on the pitch, according to a report by Mundo Deportivo.

The Ivorian is reportedly Real Madrid’s most expensive signing at €140m, increasing the scrutiny surrounding his performances as he adapts to life at the club.

Diomande struggles to influence the game

Mundo Deportivo described Diomande as largely unnoticed during the match, with his statistics highlighting his limited involvement compared with some of his team-mates.

The Ivory Coast international touched the ball 46 times and managed just one attempt, which failed to hit the target.

He created two scoring opportunities and attempted four dribbles, successfully completing three of them during his 75 minutes on the pitch.

Diomande also attempted three crosses, making him Real Madrid’s second-most frequent crosser in the match. Arda Guler, despite playing only 23 minutes, attempted five.

Coach expects gradual improvement

Despite the criticism surrounding the Ivorian’s performance, his coach acknowledged that Diomande is still adapting to the demands of top-level European football.

“Mourinho admitted after the match: “Diomandé will gradually improve. His experience in high-level European football is limited. He played for Leipzig this season, and hasn’t played much outside of it. He has a lot to learn tactically”
