Former Saudi football star Manaf Abushaqir has heaped praise on Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, insisting the Al Hilal star deserves to be considered among the best goalkeepers in world football.
Bounou once again drew global attention after helping Morocco defeat the Netherlands in a dramatic penalty shootout during the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup.
Morocco’s penalty shootout hero
Morocco advanced to the Round of 16 after overcoming the Netherlands 3–2 on penalties following a 1–1 draw after extra time.
Bounou emerged as the decisive figure during the shootout, producing crucial saves and commanding the spotlight with another composed performance on the international stage.
Praise for club and international consistency
Speaking on the “Our League is Different” programme on Saudi channel “Saudi,” Abushaqir highlighted the goalkeeper’s consistency for both club and country.
“For me, from my point of view, if we talk about the best 3 or 4 goalkeepers in the world, then Bono must be among them,” he said.
He also referenced Bounou’s performances with Al Hilal SFC, praising his impact in both domestic and international competitions.
“We must mention his great level in the Club World Cup, as well as in many matches with Al-Hilal in the Saudi League.”
“Bono remains a global icon”
Abushaqir specifically pointed to Bounou’s reactions and composure during the penalty shootout against the Netherlands, describing his technique and mentality as world-class.
“Look at the reaction to the penalty kick he saved, and the way he dealt with it. No matter how much we talk about the stardom of many Moroccan national team players, Bono remains a global icon.”
He concluded his remarks by reaffirming his belief that the Moroccan goalkeeper belongs among football’s elite.
“For me, Bono cannot be outside the top 3 goalkeepers in the world.”
