World Cup 2026: Lamine Yamal backs Spain to win it all and declares himself ready for Austria clash

Spain star Lamine Yamal remains convinced that La Roja can win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that every major tournament begins with the belief that lifting the trophy is the only objective.

The 18-year-old forward spoke ahead of Spain’s Round of 32 encounter with Austria in Los Angeles, expressing confidence in both his own fitness and the team’s ability to raise its level after an inconsistent group-stage campaign.

Reflecting on his comeback from a hamstring injury and his first World Cup goal against Saudi Arabia, Yamal described the emotions of representing Spain on football’s biggest stage.

“I felt so much happiness. I’ve never felt so much happiness before. The World Cup is something completely different.”

The Barcelona prodigy made it clear that his mentality never changes when entering elite competitions.

“When I enter a competition, I think I’m going to win it, that’s why I believe I’m going to win the World Cup this year.”

Yamal also delivered positive news regarding his physical condition. Earlier in the tournament, he admitted it was “too soon” to complete a full match as he recovered from injury, but he has now indicated that he is prepared to play the entire 90 minutes if required against Austria.

Spain topped Group H without defeat, extending their unbeaten run to 34 matches, but concerns remain about their efficiency in front of goal after the shock 0-0 draw with Cape Verde and several missed opportunities throughout the group stage.

Despite those issues, Yamal believes the European champions have yet to showcase their true potential.

“We are much better than we are showing,” he said, stressing that results matter more than performances once the knockout rounds begin.

Spain’s coaching staff are expected to place even greater emphasis on getting the ball to Yamal in dangerous areas against Austria, with teammates acknowledging that the teenager remains the side’s most decisive attacking weapon despite still regaining full fitness.

With a place in the Round of 16 on the line, Yamal’s confidence reflects the mood within the Spanish camp: improvement is required, but belief in becoming world champions remains completely intact.
