Younes Ebnoutalib hints at Germany decision as Morocco announcement nears

Younes Ebnoutalib has offered his clearest indication yet that he is leaning towards Germany, despite also being considered for Morocco’s upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The 23-year-old Eintracht Frankfurt striker was approached by supporters after being strongly tipped by the German media for a place in Jurgen Klopp’s Germany squad. In a video shared on X by FRMF Xtra, Ebnoutalib appeared uncomfortable and gave only brief responses.

When one supporter congratulated him on his reported call-up by the four-time world champions, Ebnoutalib replied: “Thank you.”

Asked what he was most excited about with the Germany national team, the forward answered: “Everything.”

The short exchange has been interpreted as a further sign that Ebnoutalib is favouring Germany, although no final decision has been formally announced.

Ebnoutalib has made a strong start to the season with Eintracht Frankfurt, scoring four goals and providing two assists in four matches. His form has increased interest from both national teams, with Morocco also considering him for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Gabon and Lesotho on 25 and 29 September.

He could also be involved in one or two possible friendlies in early October.

Morocco’s squad is due to be announced on Thursday, a few hours after Germany’s list. Some Morocco supporters continue to hope Ebnoutalib will choose the Atlas Lions, despite the latest indication that his international future may lie with Germany.

According to FRMF Xtra, Ebnoutalib, who previously represented Morocco at Under-15 level, did speak to Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi during the manager’s European tour several weeks ago. That contact contradicts reports suggesting the pair had not held discussions.

Ebnoutalib has previously given indications of a connection with Morocco. At the beginning of February, he posted a photograph of his boots bearing the Moroccan flag, a gesture viewed as a strong nod towards the Atlas Lions.

However, in July he also expressed his disappointment at being left out of Morocco’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.

His latest comments have therefore added to the uncertainty around a decision that could soon determine which country he represents at senior level. For now, the timing of the two squad announcements means Ebnoutalib’s choice may become clearer within hours.
