Morocco midfielder Azzedine Ounahi could miss action until April 2027 due to injury
Morocco international Azzedine Ounahi is expected to be sidelined for around six months after medical examinations revealed a complete tear of the biceps femoris tendon in his right leg.
The Panathinaikos midfielder will undergo surgery on Thursday, 29 October, in a bid to ensure proper recovery and reduce the risk of the injury recurring, according to Greek newspaper Ole.
The latest assessment has revealed a more serious problem than initially diagnosed, dealing a significant blow to the Moroccan midfielder and his Greek club.
Second scan reveals extent of injury
Ounahi sustained the injury during Panathinaikos’ 5-1 victory over Asteras Aktor on 18 October.
Although his side secured a convincing win, the 26-year-old’s injury has since emerged as a major concern following further medical examinations.
According to Ole, a second magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan confirmed a complete tear of the biceps femoris tendon in his right leg, prompting the decision to proceed with surgery.
Return expected during Greek league play-offs
Ounahi is expected to begin a gradual rehabilitation programme after the operation, with the aim of rebuilding his physical strength and returning to competitive football.
Initial estimates suggest the midfielder could return during the Greek league play-offs in early April 2027.
However, his recovery timeline will depend on how he responds to surgery and the rehabilitation process.
Morocco also face concern over midfielder
The lengthy absence represents a setback for Panathinaikos, who will have to manage without the Moroccan international for several months.
Ounahi’s injury could also affect Morocco’s preparations for upcoming international commitments, depending on his recovery and fitness when he is ready to return.
The midfielder’s progress through rehabilitation will therefore be important for both his club and the Moroccan national team.
