Ragnar Ache faces late fitness test ahead of FC Koln’s DFB-Pokal clash against Union Berlin

Ragnar Ache could return to action for FC Koln in Tuesday’s DFB-Pokal second-round clash against Union Berlin, but a final decision on the striker’s availability will be made shortly before kick-off.

The 28-year-old has been recovering from a muscle injury and has gradually worked his way back towards full fitness. However, head coach René Wagner remains cautious about rushing him into competitive action.

“We will have to decide tomorrow morning,” Wagner said at Monday’s press conference. The coach explained that the club had made a few further adjustments to Ache’s rehabilitation and would assess whether they had helped improve his condition.

Bundesliga return remains the main target

Although Ache could feature against Union in the cup, Köln’s primary target remains the Bundesliga meeting with the same opponents on Sunday, November 1.

Wagner is keen to ensure the forward is fully prepared before returning to action, particularly after his recent spell on the sidelines.

A place in Tuesday’s squad would allow Ache to make his comeback earlier than expected, but Köln will not take unnecessary risks if he is not ready.

Köln continue to deal with several absences

While Ache’s potential return offers encouragement, Köln remain without five players who are continuing their rehabilitation: Imad Rondić, Rav van den Berg, Thijs Dallinga, Ellyes Skhiri and Timo Hübers.

According to the club’s latest update, the remaining players are available for the upcoming fixtures.

Ache’s return would provide a timely boost to Köln’s attacking options, especially after the team struggled to create clear-cut chances in their recent goalless Bundesliga draw against Schalke.

For now, the striker’s participation against Union Berlin remains uncertain, with Wagner expected to make the final decision following a further assessment on Tuesday morning.
