Yan Diomande’s Somalia display increases pressure on Vinicius at Real Madrid

Yan Diomande has intensified the competition for Real Madrid’s left-wing position after producing an impressive performance for Cote d’Ivoire against Somalia in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.

The newcomer, who joined Real Madrid recently, and Vinicius Junior both prefer operating from the left. Although Diomande can also play on the right, his strongest performances have come on the opposite flank.

That was evident on Tuesday as Diomande played a prominent role in Cote d’Ivoire’s victory over Somalia. His display has prompted renewed debate over whether Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho should leave Vinicius on the bench and give Diomande a regular starting role on the left, according to Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo.

Somalia may not have been regarded as a major opponent, but their compact defensive approach presented a demanding test for a winger. Breaking down a crowded defence requires creativity, skill and the ability to manufacture openings, and Diomande did that effectively.

He completed five of his six dribbles, attempted three shots and created three further chances for his team-mates. While he neither scored nor provided an assist, his ability to repeatedly create opportunities was considered especially valuable in a match of that nature.

A post on X by Avazbek, published on 29 September 2026, described the performance as: “Yan Diomande vs Somalia Masterclass.”

Diomande’s influence was not limited to one particular type of attack. When pressured on the wing, he moved inside to find space. When defenders allowed him room, he took them on, and his involvement in possession regularly appeared to improve Cote d’Ivoire’s attacking play.

Mundo Deportivo contrasted that impact with Vinicius’ recent performances for both Real Madrid and the Brazil national team, describing the Brazilian as having been ineffective when introduced.

The report also suggested that Diomande appears to possess the confidence to make an immediate impact. He is not thought to need a lengthy adaptation period or extended time to overcome hesitation before showing his ability, provided Mourinho gives him consistent opportunities.

Vinicius remains an outstanding footballer and has demonstrated his quality on the pitch. However, the report argues that it has been a considerable period since he produced his best form.

With competition for places at the highest level changing quickly, the prospect of Vinicius becoming a substitute at Real Madrid is increasingly being viewed as a realistic possibility.
