Villarreal won't risk Pape Gueye ahead of 2026 World Cup

Spanish outfit, Villarreal are managing the fitness of Senegal international Pape Gueye ahead of the 2026 World Cup tournament.

The 26-year-old has missed Villarreal’s last two La Liga matches, sparking questions over his absence from the squad. However, head coach Marcelino has now clarified the situation, confirming that the decision was purely precautionary.

Speaking in a press conference, Marcelino revealed that Gueye experienced muscle discomfort during a recent training session, prompting the club to step back and avoid any unnecessary risks.

“He was due to play, but he felt a slight muscle strain during the last training session,” Marcelino explained. “We carried out tests and decided not to take any risks. The World Cup is approaching.”

The Villarreal boss stressed that the decision was made to protect the midfielder’s long-term fitness, especially with Senegal expected to rely heavily on his experience and physical presence at the tournament.

The club medical staff are now working closely with the player to ensure a full recovery, with optimism that he could return in time for Villarreal’s upcoming La Liga fixture against Sevilla, provided there are no setbacks.

Gueye’s absence is seen as a precautionary measure rather than a serious injury, with Villarreal keen to avoid aggravating any condition that could jeopardize his World Cup participation.

Senegal will be closely monitoring his recovery as they prepare for a major international campaign, where the midfielder is expected to play a key role in their midfield structure.
