‘Arsenal dodged a bullet’ – Emmanuel Petit warns Vinicius Junior would have been too much for Mikel Arteta

Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit believes Mikel Arteta may have struggled to manage Vinicius Junior had the Real Madrid forward completed a move to the Emirates.

The Brazil international was heavily linked with Arsenal during the summer transfer window, with reports suggesting he was open to leaving Madrid as he entered the final year of his previous contract.

However, Real Madrid were determined to retain their prized attacker and eventually secured his long-term future with a new six-year contract running until June 2032.

The agreement brought an end to speculation over Vinicius’ future and effectively closed the door on Arsenal’s hopes of signing the winger.

Petit, who helped Arsenal win the Premier League and FA Cup in the 1997/98 season, believes the Gunners may ultimately have avoided a difficult situation by failing to land the 26-year-old.

Speaking to Boyle Sports, the former France international questioned whether Vinicius’ personality would have fitted comfortably into Arteta’s dressing room.

“I think Vinicius Jr is a really talented player but in terms of his mentality I am not sure he is a good fit for Arsenal. That’s just my opinion.

“I see so many humble players at Arsenal so if you all of a sudden bring in someone who is completely different, it can be a problem, especially with Arteta’s style of management.”

‘A bullet dodged’ for Arsenal

Petit pointed to Vinicius’ recent confrontation with Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho as an example of the concerns he has about the winger’s temperament.

The former Arsenal midfielder also drew comparisons with an earlier incident involving Xabi Alonso, suggesting Vinicius’ behaviour towards his coaches could create unnecessary tension.

“Look at what happened between Vinicius Jnr and Jose Mourinho in the last game between Real Betis and Real Madrid. It reminded me of what happened with Xabi Alonso last season when he didn’t want to shake his hand.

“Vinicius Jr receives so much stick from the fans, the press and social media but in those moments he is sending the wrong message. I think he is probably a bullet dodged for Arsenal looking at that moment.”

Vinicius has established himself as one of the most dangerous forwards in world football, playing a central role in Real Madrid’s success since breaking into their first team.

Despite acknowledging the Brazilian’s exceptional ability, Petit believes talent alone would not have guaranteed a successful Arsenal career.

“I would have loved to see a player with the talent of Vinicius Jnr play for Arsenal but with his mentality and his ego I think it would have made for a really difficult situation to cope with.”

Arsenal miss out on another major target

Vinicius’ decision to remain at Real Madrid represents another setback for Arsenal after their pursuit of high-profile attacking talent.

The Gunners also missed out on Bradley Barcola, who completed a move to Liverpool, leaving Arteta without two of the forwards who had been linked with a switch to North London.

For Petit, however, Arsenal’s failure to sign Vinicius may prove less damaging than it initially appeared.

The former midfielder believes Arteta’s emphasis on discipline, humility and collective responsibility could have made integrating the Brazilian particularly challenging.

With Vinicius now committed to Real Madrid until 2032, Arsenal have been forced to move on from a transfer that could have transformed their attack but, according to Petit, potentially created problems behind the scenes.
