Hugo Borst captivated by Tolu Arokodare after impressive Ajax start

Dutch pundit Hugo Borst has admitted he has developed a strong liking for watching Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare after praising the Ajax forward’s impressive start to the season.

Borst’s admiration followed Arokodare’s latest influential display in Ajax’s emphatic 5-1 victory over Fortuna Sittard at the Offermans Joosten Stadion on Saturday.

The Nigerian was unable to get on the scoresheet but remained a noticeable presence in Ajax’s dominant performance before being withdrawn late in the match.

Speaking during his half-time reaction on De Eretribune on ESPN, Borst revealed how much his opinion of the forward has changed since his arrival in Amsterdam.

“How do I feel about him now?” Borst said via Voetbal Primeur. “I enjoy watching it a lot. He is an impressive figure, but the way he uses his chest… I absolutely love that.”

The Dutch football analyst was particularly impressed by Arokodare’s physical qualities and the manner in which he uses his body to influence play.

‘He is a real joy to watch’

Beyond what Arokodare offers on the pitch, Borst also highlighted the striker’s personality, describing him as someone whose character adds to his appeal.

“He is a real joy to watch,” he added. “You already saw him posing for photos with all the Fortuna supporters before the match…

“He is just a really nice guy, and that simply plays a part. I don’t think he does it to be liked; he is just genuine.”

Arokodare’s willingness to engage with supporters before kick-off appeared to leave an impression on Borst, who believes the Nigerian’s personality is authentic rather than an attempt to win public approval.

The 25-year-old was eventually replaced in the second half as Ajax introduced Kasper Dolberg for the final 15 minutes of the contest.

While he failed to score against Fortuna Sittard, Arokodare’s overall numbers underline the strong beginning he has made since joining Ajax during the summer.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee has registered five goals and two assists in eight appearances across all competitions.

His early contribution has offered encouragement as he seeks to rebuild his confidence after a difficult spell in England.

Arokodare’s return to form has also strengthened his position as he continues to establish himself at one of the Netherlands’ biggest clubs.
