Trezeguet credits Al Ahly fans after winning Egyptian Premier League Player of the Year
Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet” has credited Al Ahly’s supporters with helping him win the Egyptian Premier League Player of the Year award for last season.
The former Al Ahly player, who now represents Saudi club Al Riyadh, received the honour from the Egyptian Professional Players Association after a campaign in which he finished as the league’s top goalscorer.
Speaking while accepting the award, Trezeguet thanked Al Ahly’s fans for the role he believes they played in his success.
“I would like to thank the Al Ahly fans, who were the reason I won this award,” he said.
Trezeguet also reaffirmed his continuing connection with the Egyptian club, despite leaving at the end of the season to join Al Riyadh.
“Al Ahly will always be my home, and I will be at its disposal whenever it needs me,” he added.
The award recognises Trezeguet’s performance in the Egyptian Premier League last season, when his goalscoring form saw him finish at the top of the competition’s scoring charts. His contribution earned him the Player of the Year prize presented by the Egyptian Professional Players Association.
For Trezeguet, the recognition also carried a clear connection to the club’s support. His comments placed Al Ahly’s fanbase at the centre of his achievement, while his message about the club remaining his home underlined the relationship he continues to maintain with the Cairo side.
His departure from Al Ahly came at the conclusion of last season, when he moved to Saudi Arabia and joined Al Riyadh. The transfer ended his latest spell with the Egyptian club, but his words after receiving the award showed that he still regards Al Ahly as an important part of his career.
Trezeguet’s recognition came after he had already secured the most direct individual statistical distinction available to an attacking player in the league: finishing as its leading scorer. The Player of the Year award added a second honour to that achievement and completed a notable personal campaign.
The 30-year-old, whose full name is Mahmoud Hassan, is widely known by his nickname, “Trezeguet”. In his acceptance remarks, he expressed gratitude to the supporters rather than focusing only on his own performances, presenting the award as something in which Al Ahly’s fans had played a significant part.
He also made clear that leaving the club for Al Riyadh had not changed his attachment to Al Ahly. While his current club is in Saudi Arabia, he said he remained ready to serve the Egyptian side whenever required.
The award therefore marked both the conclusion of Trezeguet’s successful league campaign and his final recognition after departing Al Ahly at the end of the season.
