Sunderland in talks over potential Visit Ghana shirt sponsorship deal

Sunderland AFC are reportedly in discussions over a potential main shirt sponsorship agreement with Visit Ghana ahead of the 2026/27 season, in a deal that could see Ghana’s national tourism brand take centre stage on the Premier League club’s playing kits.

The proposed partnership would place the Visit Ghana brand on the front of Sunderland’s shirts, giving Ghana an international marketing platform through one of English football’s historic clubs.

Talks over the potential agreement have gained attention following a meeting involving Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin and representatives of Sunderland.

While discussions are understood to be ongoing and no final agreement has yet been confirmed, the potential partnership would represent a significant move in Ghana’s efforts to promote the country as a leading tourism destination to a global audience.

If completed, Visit Ghana would replace the betting-related brands that have previously occupied the prominent front-of-shirt sponsorship position on Sunderland’s kits. The move would therefore also mark a shift towards promoting a national tourism campaign through a major international sporting platform.

Sunderland, one of England’s most recognised football clubs, have a large and passionate following both domestically and internationally. A front-of-shirt partnership would give Visit Ghana substantial exposure through the club’s matches, digital platforms, merchandise and wider commercial activities.

For Ghana, the proposed deal could provide an opportunity to showcase the country’s tourism attractions to millions of football supporters, particularly across the United Kingdom and other international markets.

The timing of the discussions is also significant as Sunderland prepare for the 2026/27 campaign. The club’s shirt is one of its most visible commercial assets, with the main sponsor receiving prominent exposure throughout the season.

The involvement of Speaker Bagbin in discussions with Sunderland representatives adds a political and institutional dimension to the proposed partnership, although it remains unclear whether the talks will ultimately result in a completed sponsorship agreement.

A successful deal would bring together two distinct objectives: Sunderland would secure a high-profile commercial partner, while Ghana would use the global reach of English football to strengthen its tourism promotion efforts.

The potential Sunderland-Visit Ghana partnership would also continue the growing trend of African countries and tourism authorities using football clubs in major European leagues as vehicles for international destination marketing.

For now, however, the agreement remains under discussion, with further details expected if negotiations progress towards a formal partnership.

Should the deal be finalised, Visit Ghana could become a highly visible presence on Sunderland’s shirts throughout the 2026/27 season, putting Ghanaian tourism directly in front of a global football audience.
