Spain World Cup jet triggers anger and conspiracy claims in Argentina

A promotional aircraft bearing Spain’s World Cup‐winning team has sparked outrage and conspiracy theories in Argentina, where many fans are still struggling to accept defeat in the 2026 final.

The Spanish plane, decorated with the national team’s crest and images of players, was spotted in Buenos Aires shortly after Spain’s 1–0 extra‐time victory over Argentina in the World Cup final, according to Spanish newspaper AS.

The sighting has fuelled a wave of anger on social media in Argentina, where some supporters accused the airline of mocking them in the wake of Spain’s triumph.

Fury online and calls for a replay

Argentina’s loss in the final has already led to a flurry of conspiracy theories among sections of the fanbase, with some calling for the match to be replayed.

Local coverage and social media posts have highlighted claims from angry fans that decisions during the match were biased, and that Argentina had been unfairly denied a second consecutive world title.

The anger intensified when images of the Spanish-branded aircraft began circulating online.

AS reported: “شوهدت طايرة تحمل شعار المنتخب الاسباني وصورة لاعبيه في بوينس ايرس.. وقد اثار هذا الامر استياء بعض الارجنتينيين، الذين زعموا ان شركة الطيران الاسبانية كانت تحاول السخرية منهم بعد فوز لاروخا بكاس العالم”.

Roughly translated, the paper said the presence of the plane in Buenos Aires “annoyed some Argentinians, who claimed that the Spanish airline was trying to mock them after La Roja’s World Cup win”.

There has been no indication from Spanish authorities or the airline involved that the flight was intended as a provocation. Such promotional liveries are typically scheduled months in advance as part of commercial partnerships with national teams.

Spain crowned after Ferran Torres extra‐time strike

Spain secured the 2026 World Cup title with a narrow 1–0 victory over Argentina, courtesy of a goal from Ferran Torres in extra time.

The tightly contested final denied Argentina the chance to retain the trophy, having arrived at the tournament as defending champions and one of the favourites.
