Spain boss De la Fuente hints at Fermin Lopez start against Croatia

Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has praised Fermin Lopez’s current form and suggested the Barcelona midfielder could start against Croatia in the UEFA Nations League on Tuesday.

Both teams opened their League A Group 3 campaigns with victories. Spain recorded a 3-2 win away against England, while Croatia beat the Czech Republic 2-1.

With four Nations League matches scheduled over a short period, De la Fuente is expected to make changes for Croatia’s visit to Seville. He said the demands of the fixture programme meant some players would be rested, while others deserved the chance to play.

“Playing four matches at this level within ten days is extremely exhausting,” De la Fuente said.

“There are players we want to give a break. We need to refresh the team a little. Not only for this reason, but also because the reserve players deserve it.

“This does not worry me at all. The players who take part will be the most prepared.”

Lopez is among those seeking an opportunity after being recalled to the Spain squad following an excellent start to the season with Barcelona.

The 23-year-old has scored four goals and made two assists in his first four La Liga appearances. His performances earned him a return to the national team after he missed the 2026 World Cup because of a foot fracture.

“It was tough because I think I deserved to be there,” Lopez told Mundo Deportivo after being selected for Spain’s latest squad.

De la Fuente has now further strengthened the midfielder’s case by underlining the range of qualities he can offer the team.

“He’s in fantastic form, just like Dani Olmo,” the Spain coach said.

“He gives us energy, vitality, intensity, a lot of talent, class and finishing ability. He’s a world-class player and fits perfectly with our style of play.”

Lopez could also mark his return to the Spain side with a memorable occasion in Seville, with members of his family expected to be in attendance.

The Barcelona player will now wait to see whether De la Fuente’s assessment leads to a prominent role against Croatia at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.
