Roshn Saudi League set for January fixture surge as clubs await postponed-match decisions
Roshn Saudi League will stage four consecutive rounds in January after the postponement of the Asian Cup to December 2027 prompted a major revision of the 2026-27 schedule, according to Saudi media reports.
The Saudi Pro League has identified rounds 18, 19, 20 and 21 for the January run-in. The four rounds will form the opening sequence of the competition’s second half and are intended to make use of the newly available period in the continental calendar.
The revised winter programme is due to begin with round 17 on 31 December, with its final matches scheduled for 2 January. Under the proposed arrangements, clubs would have a four-day interval between the conclusion of one round and the start of the next from round 17 until the beginning of round 20.
The plan is designed to give players sufficient time for rest and recovery during one of the busiest periods of the season.
Details of the proposed calendar were presented at a workshop held by the Saudi Pro League’s competitions department on Thursday. Representatives from Roshn Saudi League clubs attended the meeting, where officials outlined the updated schedule and invited feedback before its formal approval.
The league is expected to resume with round 13 on 26 November. That follows the completion of Saudi clubs’ scheduled international commitments, which are due to take place between 23 and 25 November.
A key part of the discussions was how to accommodate postponed fixtures involving eight clubs: Al Hilal, Al Nassr, Al Ittihad, Al Ahli, Al Shabab, Al Kholood, Al Riyadh and Abha.
One of the leading proposals is to play the postponed matches from round nine after the current international break. The fixtures include three high-profile meetings: Al Ahli against Al Nassr at Al Ahli’s home ground, Al Riyadh against Al Hilal at Al Riyadh’s stadium, and Al Ittihad against Al Shabab at Al Ittihad’s home venue.
The Saudi Pro League will consider the clubs’ views on the full set of proposals before confirming the new dates officially in the coming days.
The changes follow the unexpected decision to move the Asian Cup to December 2027, which has allowed the league to reshape its schedule and intensify the domestic programme during January.
