Olympique de Marseille secured their first points of this season’s Europa League with a 1-0 victory away to Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday.
The result came on the fourth matchday of the competition and was decided by a superb strike from Algeria international Amine Gouiri.
The match remained level until the 77th minute, when the 26-year-old forward produced an excellent finish to beat the German goalkeeper and put Marseille ahead. His goal proved enough to earn the visitors three valuable points in Germany.
The win is particularly significant for Marseille after they began their European campaign with three consecutive defeats. Beating Bayer Leverkusen on their own ground has revived the French club’s hopes of qualification and provided a welcome boost to their confidence in Europe.
Gouiri, who is under contract with Olympique de Marseille until 2029, is valued at 30 million euros by Transfermarkt. His decisive contribution on Thursday further underlined his importance to the club’s attacking system.
