France squad: Injuries create openings for Zidane before Nations League tests

Zinedine Zidane is expected to make several changes to his France squad when he announces his second selection as national team manager on Friday at 18:00 Paris time.

France face Italy in Milan on 12 November before hosting Turkey in Bordeaux on 15 November, with a number of significant absences likely to affect Zidane’s plans. Several established players are also in line to return after missing the team’s first gathering in September.

Ousmane Dembele is expected to be unavailable because of injury, while midfielder Manu Kone and striker Esteban Lepaul are also doubts. Lepaul is dealing with an ankle problem.

There are further concerns over defender Jules Kounde, who has not fully recovered from a sprained left ankle, and Maxence Lacroix, who is suffering from a hamstring tear.

The squad could nevertheless be strengthened by the return of several important players. Aurelien Tchouameni has resumed playing for Real Madrid following a lengthy absence, while Warren Zaire-Emery is back from injury. Ibrahima Konate is also expected to be considered.

Captain Kylian Mbappe could return to the group after missing most of France’s previous matches because of a left knee injury.

Attacking options

According to French newspaper L’Equipe, the absences, particularly in attack, may give Zidane the opportunity to recall some less expected names.

Lens forward Florian Thauvin is among the leading candidates for a return after a lengthy international absence. He has impressed this season, scoring six goals and providing eight assists in 12 matches.

Inter Milan striker Marcus Thuram is another possible inclusion after missing the September gathering. Zidane may also give opportunities to younger players, including Tottenham forward Mathys Tel and Bournemouth attacker Eli Junior Kroupi.

Valentin Atangana is among the players from the youth sides who could also be considered for a call-up.

Zidane introduced five new players to his first squad: Guillaume Restes, Jeremy Jacquet, Andy Diouf, Lucas Da Cunha and Esteban Lepaul. His latest selection is expected to continue that policy of renewal while prioritising players in the strongest physical and technical condition.

France currently lead their Nations League group with 10 points and will aim to secure their place in the quarter-finals across the two upcoming fixtures.
