Tenerife majority shareholder Raiko Garcia promised Jesus de Miguel’s daughter would have everything she needed as the club’s players gathered to mourn the death of their team-mate.
The commitment was made at the funeral home, where Garcia brought the squad together to discuss arrangements for de Miguel’s farewell and how the club could support his wife, Maria, and their daughter in the months ahead.
According to Spanish journalist Joel del Rio, writing for Marca, the players stood around Garcia and listened as he asked them to remain close to Maria.
“I ask you to be there for Maria,” Garcia told them. “And I promise you that his daughter will want for nothing.”
Garcia was unable to continue speaking. Overcome with emotion, he broke down in tears and left the room, while the players themselves were still dealing with the shock and grief of losing their colleague.
Del Rio described the scene as more than a brief expression of sympathy. It was a promise made in front of a devastated dressing room on behalf of a child who had just lost her father.
The journalist said Garcia treated the responsibility as something that went beyond his position at the club or the usual demands of football administration.
City unites around de Miguel’s family
The mourning extended beyond the Tenerife squad, with supporters, friends and members of the wider football community gathering to say goodbye to de Miguel and offer their support to his family.
Del Rio said Tenerife had shown a strong sense of solidarity during the tragedy, regardless of club colours or differences. He described the club as having been a family for the player and said it now had to become the main source of support for Maria and her daughter.
However, the journalist warned that the most difficult period would come after the funeral ceremonies ended, when the crowds and cameras disappeared and the family faced the daily reality of de Miguel’s absence.
Del Rio concluded that the lasting memory of the days following the player’s death would not be limited to the scenes of grief. He highlighted the humanity shown by the club and the city, as well as the meaning of Garcia’s promise that Maria and her daughter would not be left to face life alone after de Miguel’s death.
The fixture information accompanying the report lists Granada v Tenerife in Segunda Division on 07 November 2026. It also lists Andorra v Mallorca in Segunda Division on 08 November 2026.
