Cesc Fabregas’ rapid Como rise puts Barcelona, Arsenal and Chelsea on alert

Cesc Fabregas has emerged as a potential target for three of Europe’s leading clubs after guiding Como from Italian outsiders to Champions League contenders in the space of two years.

The 39-year-old Spaniard led Como to fourth place in Serie A and secured the club’s qualification for the Champions League. His side have also made a strong impression in Europe, recording a 4-1 victory over Manchester United before producing a remarkable 9-1 away win against Lens.

Those results have lifted Como to fourth in the Champions League standings and left them close to reaching the knockout stages.

Fabregas began his coaching career at Como in July 2023, taking charge of the club’s Under-19 team. Four months later, he was promoted to the first-team role on an interim basis.

He subsequently worked as assistant to Osian Roberts, helping Como secure promotion to the Italian top flight, before being appointed permanent head coach in July 2024.

Como finished 10th in Fabregas’ first Serie A campaign. They then improved to fourth the following season, a rise which has attracted the attention of several of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Barcelona are regarded as one possible destination. Fabregas previously came through the club’s La Masia academy, and his name could be considered as a successor to Hansi Flick if the German’s tenure does not develop as hoped, according to the British newspaper The Sun.

Fabregas could also be considered by two of his former clubs, Arsenal and Chelsea, should either have a vacancy in the manager’s position.

The former midfielder is also reported to have rejected an approach from Inter Milan last summer to become their head coach.

However, Como would face a difficult task in persuading Fabregas to leave. His involvement at the club extends beyond his duties as manager, as he also owns a minority stake.

Fabregas joined Como as a player in 2022 before moving into coaching and becoming a central figure in the club’s rise.
