Barcelona return to Atletico Madrid’s Metropolitano on 08 November 2026 seeking a fifth consecutive La Liga victory at the stadium, with the latest meeting carrying major implications for the Spanish league title race.
The ground, which was once a difficult destination for Barcelona, has increasingly become a venue of success for the Catalan side since Atletico moved there for the 2017-18 season, according to figures published by Spanish newspaper Sport.
The first two league meetings at the Metropolitano ended in 1-1 draws. Barcelona then secured their first win at the stadium in December 2019, when Lionel Messi scored a late winner.
Atletico responded with victories in the next two seasons, but the balance of power shifted decisively after that.
Four visits, four league wins
Barcelona began their current run of dominance in January 2023 under Xavi Hernandez, claiming a narrow victory through Ousmane Dembele’s goal.
They returned to Madrid in March 2024 and produced a far more convincing performance, winning 3-0 with goals from Joao Felix, Robert Lewandowski and Fermin Lopez.
The most dramatic encounter came in March 2025, during Hansi Flick’s tenure. Barcelona were two goals behind with 20 minutes remaining, but staged a remarkable comeback to win 4-2. Lewandowski, Ferran Torres, Lamine Yamal and Raphinha completed the turnaround in one of the season’s most eventful matches.
The sequence continued last April. Giuliano Simeone put Atletico ahead, but Marcus Rashford equalised only three minutes later. Lewandowski then struck in the 87th minute to give Barcelona a 2-1 victory.
Knockout meetings tell a different story
Barcelona’s recent league record at the Metropolitano has been strong, but cup and European meetings between the sides have followed a less predictable pattern.
In the 2025 Copa del Rey semi-final, the teams drew 4-4 in an extraordinary first leg at Montjuic. Ferran Torres then scored the only goal of the second leg in Madrid, sending Barcelona through with a 1-0 win.
Atletico gained revenge in the same competition last season. They established a 4-0 lead in the first leg and survived a late Barcelona fightback in the return fixture, with the tie finishing 4-3 on aggregate in favour of Los Rojiblancos.
The sides also met in last season’s UEFA Champions League. Atletico won 2-0 at Camp Nou, before Barcelona responded with a 2-1 victory in Madrid through goals from Yamal and Torres. However, Ademola Lookman’s goal prevented Barcelona from completing the comeback.
Barcelona therefore arrive with memories of four successive league wins at the Metropolitano, but the latest contest offers a fresh test. With top spot at stake, their recent record will provide confidence, while Atletico will look to produce a different outcome in a fixture that has repeatedly delivered tense and contrasting results.
