Koopmeiners and Kolo Muani earn Juventus narrow Europa League win at AZ Alkmaar

Juventus held on for a 2-1 victory away to AZ Alkmaar at the AFAS Stadium on Thursday, securing a hard-fought result in the fourth round of the Europa League league phase.

The Italian side moved on to 10 points and climbed to fifth in the standings. AZ Alkmaar remain on six points in 14th place.

Juventus took the lead after 19 minutes when Teun Koopmeiners finished Randal Kolo Muani’s precise low pass. The midfielder controlled the opportunity before sending a left-footed shot into the net.

The visitors continued to apply pressure and doubled their advantage eight minutes before half-time. Kolo Muani capitalised on an error in the AZ Alkmaar defence and struck a left-footed effort into the far corner.

AZ Alkmaar responded with greater attacking intent after the interval as they attempted to reduce the deficit, but Juventus protected their lead through a strong defensive display.

The hosts eventually found a way through in the 88th minute, when Mexx Meerdink pulled one goal back. AZ Alkmaar appeared to have levelled two minutes later, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

That decision ensured a tense finish, with the home side committing players forward and putting sustained pressure on the Juventus defence.

The late onslaught visibly frustrated Juventus manager Luciano Spalletti, who was seen angrily reacting to some of his players both during the closing stages and after the final whistle.

Juventus nevertheless secured the points to maintain their position near the top of the Europa League standings, while AZ Alkmaar were left to reflect on a missed opportunity after their late fightback fell short.
