Rodri to Real Madrid: Florentino Perez accused of blocking ‘perfect’ transfer for Ballon d’Or winner

Florentino Perez is being accused by a leading Spanish journalist of standing in the way of what is being described in Madrid as the “perfect” signing: Manchester City midfielder Rodri.

In a fiercely worded column for sports daily Marca, Spanish writer Jesus Sanchez argues that the Real Madrid president’s personal doubts over Rodri’s fitness are now the only significant obstacle to a deal that enjoys rare, near-unanimous backing among fans and technical staff at the Bernabeu.

President’s doubts ‘could make Rodri impossible’

Sanchez’s article, headlined “Recklessness or signing Rodri”, was published after reports in Spain claimed Perez is the only senior figure at Real still hesitating over a move for the Spain international and 2024 Ballon d’Or winner.

The concern, according to those reports, is the possibility of fresh injury setbacks for the Manchester City player, who missed a spell of club football last season before starring at Euro 2024.

Sanchez suggests that, on every other front, the conditions are in place for Rodri to join Real Madrid and lead a new era in midfield after Toni Kroos’s retirement.

“قد يكون الامر برمته مرتبطا باقتناع فلورنتينو بيريز بان رودري هو اللاعب الذي يحتاجه الفريق بالفعل. كل العوامل الاخرى تبدو متوافقة. ولهذا السبب تحديدا، قد يتحول التعاقد مع رودري الى صفقة مستحيلة بالنسبة لريال مدريد. فمن يستطيع تغيير قناعة شخص يعتقد دايما انه على صواب، لانه نجح في اتخاذ القرارات الصحيحة في مناسبات عديدة؟”

He describes the ongoing hesitation as “incomprehensible” given the broad consensus in Madrid’s sporting and supporter base that Rodri is exactly the profile of player required.

‘Never an easier chance to sign a Ballon d’Or winner’

Sanchez argues that the “final approval” of Perez is all that is missing.

“اذا كانت الموافقة النهايية تعتمد على فلورنتينو، فان بقية التفاصيل تبدو سهلة. فلم يسبق ان كانت فرصة ضم لاعب بهذه المثالية، ولا ان كان الطريق نحو التعاقد مع لاعب يحمل الكرة الذهبية بهذه السهولة الظاهرية.”

The columnist lists a series of factors that, in his view, make the move feel not only possible but natural: Rodri’s exceptional performances on the biggest international stage after overcoming injury fears, Real Madrid’s clear need for a midfield conductor in the post-Kroos era, and the 28-year-old’s personal desire to return to Spain.

Sanchez points to the scenes at Madrid’s traditional celebration point, Plaza de Cibeles, and the loud campaigning on social media by Real fans – coupled, he notes, with “the anxiety of rival supporters” – as evidence that public opinion in Spain’s capital is already firmly behind the deal.

Emotional pull and strategic logic

He describes the Rodri idea as a “seed” that “appeared and grew organically” and argues that Real Madrid’s failure to push the move to completion is what now appears most surprising.

“لقد ظهرت الفكرة ونمت بشكل تلقايي، وكل ما تحتاجه هو ان يتركها النادي تكبر. والغريب حقا ليس الحديث عن امكانية اتمام الصفقة، بل انها لم تغلق حتى الان، وان ريال مدريد لم يبدا في رعاية هذه “النبتة” بالفعل.”

Mourinho ‘key to changing Perez’s mind’

Sanchez even floats the prospect that Jose Mourinho – the former Real Madrid coach now steadily re-emerging in the European game – could be one of the few figures capable of convincing Perez to change his stance.

“لماذا؟ هكذا كان سيجيب مورينيو، الذي يعد احد المدربين القلايل القادرين على تغيير راي رييس النادي، وقد يكون هو المفتاح لكشف هذا اللغز.”

He insists the deal should not be contingent on player sales and warns against any suggestion that off-pitch issues could derail the move, such as Rodri’s inclusion in another presidential candidate’s wishlist, or any distance between the midfielder and Vinicius Junior following the 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony.

‘Nuclear attack’ needs a strategist

Sanchez says Real Madrid’s recent inconsistency has increased the demand among fans for what they see as rational, sporting-led decision making – and that signing Rodri would be the clearest possible signal of that approach.

فمع امتلاك الفريق الملكي ترسانة هجومية اشبه بـ”السلاح النووي” تضم فينيسيوس جونيور وكيليان مبابي وجود بيلينجهام، فان الفريق الذي يشبه في اسلوبه المنتخب الفرنسي، يفتقد تحديدا الى الشخص القادر على رسم الخطة، وتنظيم طريقة لعبه، ومنح الاداء هوية واضحة.

ولا يقتصر الامر على ذلك، اذ يحتاج ريال مدريد ايضا الى تعزيز الروابط العاطفية والرياضية مع افضل منتخب في العالم، المنتخب الاسباني. رودري يعني التطور”.

With Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham already in place, he concludes that Rodri is the missing piece who can “draw the blueprint” and give this Real Madrid side a distinct identity – provided Florentino Perez can be persuaded to sign.
