Rayan Aït-Nouri faces difficult spell as competition intensifies at Manchester City
Rayan Aït-Nouri enters a complicated phase of his Manchester City career as he struggles to reclaim his place in Pep Guardiola’s starting lineup.
The Algerian left-back began the season strongly before everything shifted after a costly moment against Brighton, when he contributed to the winning goal despite playing through an injury he had sustained the previous week against Tottenham.
His condition later forced him to stop. He spent nearly two months recovering from an ankle problem, mirroring a similar injury spell a year earlier.
During this period, young full-back Nico O’Reilley seized his chance and established himself in Guardiola’s preferred eleven, reshaping the hierarchy on the left side of the defence.
Aït-Nouri returned to action in November and played 45 minutes against Bayer Leverkusen, but Guardiola substituted him at halftime as Ibrahim Maza dominated the left flank.
The Algerian defender has not featured since, spending four consecutive matches on the bench without a single minute of play.
The situation frustrates him, especially after several promising seasons with Wolves that positioned him for a major breakthrough at 24.
Manchester City’s environment offers fierce competition, and every mistake carries weight.
Yet City also play an enormous number of matches, giving players chances to fight their way back into the rotation.
Aït-Nouri now needs to respond and reclaim momentum in the second half of the season.
He at least holds one positive note: he will be fully fit for the Africa Cup of Nations.
The national team, however, presents its own internal challenge. Jaouen Hadjam continues to impress and competes directly with him for the starting role at left-back, increasing pressure on Aït-Nouri ahead of the tournament.
As Manchester City push through a demanding campaign, the defender must show Guardiola he can offer reliability, intensity and tactical discipline.
The final months before AFCON 2025 will define whether he regains his footing at club level while fighting to protect his place with Algeria.
