Pedro Porro vows Tottenham future as Spain World Cup winner brushes off final replay row

Spain defender Pedro Porro says he is fully committed to Tottenham Hotspur and unmoved by calls from Argentina for a replay of the World Cup final in which his country were crowned champions.

The right-back, a key part of the Spain side that beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time to win the World Cup, was speaking at an emotional tribute event in his hometown of Don Benito.

Porro, who has just enjoyed the biggest triumph of his career, insisted the World Cup victory has not dulled his hunger for further success.

“There is still a lot for me to achieve. I am a player with big ambitions and I am always trying to learn more. Everyone who knows me knows that I always want more,” he said.

Emotional homecoming in Don Benito

The Tottenham defender admitted he had been moved by the reception in Don Benito, where local fans and residents gathered to honour him.

Porro said he wanted to dedicate the World Cup success to everyone who had supported him from his earliest days in football.

He acknowledged that he had never imagined receiving such a tribute in his hometown, and stressed that reaching the elite level had required “a lot of sacrifices”, particularly when he had to leave home in order to pursue his professional career.

The Spain international used the ceremony to reflect on his journey from a small town in Extremadura to the top of the world game, underlining the personal challenges behind his rise.

In a lighter moment, Porro joked with those present about the popularity of his grandfather, Antonio Sausceda, quipping that the reception “was for him” rather than for himself, drawing laughter from the crowd.

Focus fixed on Tottenham

Addressing speculation over his next move, Porro made clear that his immediate future lies in north London.

He confirmed he will remain with Tottenham, the club with which he is under contract, and said he feels “very happy” there.

Although he did not rule out returning to play in Spain at some point in his career, he underlined that his full focus is currently on his time in England and on continuing his development in the Premier League.

Porro’s remarks will be welcomed by Tottenham supporters, with the defender reinforcing the idea that his long-term ambitions can be met with his current club.

World Cup replay demands dismissed

Porro also addressed, albeit briefly, the criticism coming from Argentina and the calls in some quarters for the World Cup final to be replayed.

He said he had not seen “anything” about the matter and described the complaints as “just things said from the outside” which do not concern him personally.

By turning the focus back to his own career and his commitments with Tottenham and Spain, Porro made clear that, for him, the World Cup triumph is settled history – and that his attention is firmly on what comes next.
