Orlando Pirates must quickly turn their CAF Champions League success into domestic results as they begin a demanding week with a Carling Knockout tie against Milford FC on Tuesday, followed by the Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday.
Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side secured their place in the Champions League group stages at the weekend by beating African Stars 4-0, completing a 5-0 aggregate victory over the Namibian side.
That achievement marked an important step for Pirates, who failed to reach the group stages last season. However, there will be little opportunity to celebrate, with a place in the Carling Knockout quarter-finals at stake before attention turns to the Betway Premiership.
Pirates won the Carling Knockout last season and will want to keep their bid to retain the trophy alive. Milford, from KwaZulu-Natal, will be determined to produce a notable result against one of South Africa’s leading clubs, while the knockout format leaves Ouaddou’s team with no margin for error.
The Pirates coach will also have to manage his squad carefully. The match comes only days after the physical and emotional demands of the Champions League qualifiers, and the team’s depth, recovery and concentration will all be tested during the tight schedule.
Ouaddou has highlighted the importance of having sufficient attacking options to rotate while competing on several fronts. The coming run will provide an early indication of whether his wider squad can supply the necessary contributions.
Derby demands
Should Pirates overcome Milford, their focus will move to FNB Stadium, where they face Kaizer Chiefs in one of the most significant fixtures on the domestic calendar.
The Soweto Derby brings the pressure of local bragging rights as well as valuable league points. It also gives Pirates the chance to carry the confidence from their continental campaign into their meeting with Chiefs.
But the derby cannot be allowed to overshadow Tuesday’s cup assignment. The fixture against Milford must be negotiated first before Pirates can concentrate fully on their rivals.
The three-match sequence represents a demanding period for Ouaddou’s squad as it attempts to balance domestic ambitions with the demands of continental football. The third consequential assignment in the run offers another chance to maintain momentum, although Pirates’ immediate priority remains the Carling Knockout.
Victory on Tuesday would preserve their hopes of defending the trophy and allow them to approach the Soweto Derby with their cup campaign still intact.
Pirates have already secured their Champions League group-stage place. Their next challenge is to ensure that progress is reflected in domestic competition, beginning with Milford before the spotlight shifts to Kaizer Chiefs.
