Morocco plan to revive Brahim Diaz’s Real Madrid prospects

Brahim Diaz’s lack of playing time at Real Madrid has prompted concern ahead of Morocco’s two-match meeting with Niger on 13 and 17 November, but national team coach Mohamed Ouahbi says the forward will continue to receive the squad’s full backing.

Diaz has made only two starts and played 242 minutes since the start of the season, leaving him short of regular competitive football under Jose Mourinho. Despite that difficult situation, Ouahbi believes Morocco can help the player rebuild his confidence and return to Real Madrid in stronger form.

Speaking at a news conference, the Morocco coach acknowledged that both he and Diaz want the player to feature more regularly for his club.

“Whether it is us or him, he wants to play more. He is at one of the best clubs in the world, and the competition is very, very strong,” Ouahbi said.

However, he insisted there was no reason to question the international’s ability, pointing to Diaz’s attitude whenever he joins the Lions of the Atlas.

“We are not really worried about his level because, when he is with the national team, he is very happy to be there and wants to give everything. We will encourage him. We will make sure he plays very big matches with us so that he can return to Real Madrid and earn even more playing time.”

Morocco’s intention is to give Diaz minutes, responsibility and confidence during the forthcoming fixtures, in the hope that strong performances for his country can help him change his position at club level. Ouahbi accepts that the plan may not succeed, but said the objective was clear.

The coach also avoided criticising Mourinho’s team selections.

“I cannot get involved in the coach’s decisions. Everyone has their own solutions to find,” he said.

Diaz is therefore expected to retain an important role in Morocco’s attacking plans, despite his limited involvement for Real Madrid. That preferential treatment has divided opinion, with former Morocco great Mustapha Hadji among those questioning the place being given to the Madrid player while he remains short of match practice.

Mourinho has recently said he has no complaints about Diaz. The Portuguese coach praised the forward’s professionalism, commitment in training and performances, while explaining that the level of competition at Real Madrid was restricting his opportunities.

For now, Diaz appears determined to continue fighting for his place at the club. Until his situation changes, Morocco will offer him what Real Madrid currently cannot guarantee: regular playing time, confidence and responsibility.

The player, who initially resisted joining the national team for several years, now finds the Lions of the Atlas helping to support his career.
