Five Cameroon internationals facing key decisions in January transfer window

With the winter transfer window opening in less than two months, five Cameroon internationals could be on the move as they seek regular football, a fresh challenge or to capitalise on rising interest.

Faris Moumbagna is facing the most difficult situation at Marseille. After returning from an underwhelming loan spell at Cremonese, the forward has made just five Ligue 1 appearances this season, totalling 17 minutes.

Bruno Genesio has left him out of the squad on several occasions, while Moumbagna is no longer being selected in the Europa League. He has yet to score or provide an assist, and his market value has fallen sharply.

Marseille are looking to reduce their wage bill and trim the squad, making them open to either a loan or a permanent transfer. For Moumbagna, a move could provide an opportunity to regain his rhythm with the Africa Cup of Nations six months away. Africafoot’s analysis includes former Cameroon international Oumarou Idrissou.

Angel Yondjo is another player waiting for a greater first-team role. The winger joined Lille from EFBC in the summer of 2025 for close to 2 million euros and impressed for the reserve side, scoring 15 goals in 25 National 3 matches.

He finally made his senior debut against Monaco on 26 October, playing 11 minutes, but remains behind Lille’s established players. The Douala-born forward has already won three senior caps for Cameroon and is no longer expected to settle for N2 football.

His representatives, who have recently signed with Premium Sports Management, are pushing for a six-month loan without an option to buy, as exclusively reported by Africafoot. Lille remain committed to the player until 2030 and are in agreement with that approach.

Arthur Avom is attracting the strongest interest. After helping Lorient win Ligue 2 in 2025, he became a key figure in Ligue 1, starting regularly and making 31 appearances last season. He has played 596 minutes this campaign and established himself as the midfield leader.

The modern box-to-box midfielder has drawn attention from England. Africafoot reports that Hull City, Sunderland, Leeds, Everton, Bournemouth and Chelsea have all watched him. His contract runs until June 2027, but Lorient know he is unlikely to extend it and would consider a January sale for an offer of about 10 to 12 million euros. Idrissou, a former Cameroon Under-17 goalkeeper, has assessed his situation.

Harouna Djibirin faces a similar challenge to Yondjo at Angers. After joining from AS Dauphine in January 2025 following a lengthy wait for administrative clearance, he made his Ligue 1 debut against Monaco in October 2025. This season, the left winger has recorded 138 minutes and one goal.

Angers have four wingers ahead of him and favour a loan move for the player they signed on a four-year contract. The club is not considering a sale. Club Bruges showed interest several months ago but could not reach an agreement with Angers. Idrissou has also given his view on the situation.

For Ignatius Ganago, the issue is the search for a new project. The forward endured a difficult season with Nantes in Ligue 2 after a proposed move to the Gulf failed to materialise in the summer.

He stayed at Nantes but has lost his starting place, featuring in eight matches, four of them from the beginning, and scoring once in 554 minutes. His contract expires in June 2027, and the club no longer see him as an automatic starter.

At 27, the former Lens player needs a club where he can feel important again. A Ligue 1 move to a side fighting to stay up, or an ambitious and lucrative project in Saudi Arabia, could offer him a new beginning after two stagnant seasons.
