Atletico Madrid v FC Barcelona: Raphinha backed to strike in top-of-the-table Liga clash

FC Barcelona visit second-placed Atletico Madrid on Sunday, 8 November 2026, with a two-point lead at the top of Liga. Victory for Atletico would draw them level with their opponents, while defeat would leave them five points behind. The match at the Wanda Metropolitano begins at 20:00 GMT.

Nasser Eddy, a consultant for NCI Sport and presenter of the European Champions League on radio Nostalgie, expects FC Barcelona to edge a closely contested match. His main selection is a Barcelona win at odds of 1.89, with a 2-1 scoreline priced at 8.5.

Atletico Madrid under pressure

Diego Simeone’s side have not lost at home in Liga this season, but they were beaten 2-0 by Bayern Munich in the Champions League this week. The result was a reminder of the recent dip in their form, despite an otherwise strong start to the campaign.

Atletico have scored more than once in only one of their past five matches in all competitions – last weekend’s meeting with Levante. They have also won no more than four corners in each of their last four games.

Their defence remains the outstanding strength. Atletico have conceded just eight goals in 11 Liga matches, making them the division’s best defensive side.

Barcelona’s attacking threat

FC Barcelona lead Liga for goals, with 46 in 11 matches – twice the number scored by second-best Real Madrid. They followed that attacking form with a 3-0 home victory over Aston Villa in the Champions League this week.

Their recent corner count has been lower, at fewer than five per match across their last five games in all competitions. However, Raphinha and Lamine Yamal have provided a formidable attacking partnership, scoring 19 and 13 goals respectively this season. Raphinha has scored 15 in Liga, while Yamal has 10.

Barcelona have lost their past two major tests against Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, and have shown some discipline issues. They have received at least two yellow cards in each of their last four Liga matches.

Raphinha has responded to those setbacks with two doubles in three days in two different competitions. The Brazil international, now playing as a centre-forward after the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, has scored 19 times in total, including 15 goals in 10 Liga appearances in the 2026-2027 campaign. He is also Barcelona’s captain.

Head-to-head record and key selections

FC Barcelona lead the overall meetings with 116 victories to Atletico Madrid’s 79. They won both encounters at the Wanda Metropolitano last season, in Liga and the Champions League, by the same 2-1 scoreline.

Eddy’s recommended selections are Barcelona to win at 1.89, an exact 1-2 result at 8.5 and fewer than 8.5 total corners at 2.71. Raphinha is priced at 1.88 to score at any time, while Yamal is 2.11.

Raphinha is considered the likeliest scorer after his recent return to form. Yamal has scored three goals in two matches since Saturday and could also continue that run in Madrid.

The odds may change.
