Morocco defender Nayef Aguerd’s Marseille future in doubt amid Gulf interest

Morocco international Nayef Aguerd could be set for another move this summer, with fresh doubts emerging over his long-term future at Olympique de Marseille despite having joined the French club only a year ago.

Aguerd, 28, arrived at Marseille last summer from West Ham United in a transfer worth around €23m, but French newspaper La Provence reports that the prospect of his departure has resurfaced in recent days.

The defender’s performances over recent seasons, both at club level and with Morocco, have helped maintain his reputation as one of the more in-demand centre-backs on the market. According to the same report, several clubs looking to strengthen their defensive options are monitoring his situation.

Gulf clubs monitoring situation

Aguerd endured a difficult campaign last season after suffering a pubic area injury, an issue that affected both his availability and his level of performance. Despite that setback, he remains on the radar of a number of Gulf clubs, who are said to be following developments closely with a view to a possible move in the current transfer window.

These clubs are understood to be assessing Marseille’s stance before making any formal approach, but their interest has contributed to increasing uncertainty over whether Aguerd will stay in Europe beyond this summer.

Long contract but reported release clause

The centre-back is under contract with Olympique de Marseille until June 2030, a long-term deal that in theory secures his future at Stade Velodrome for the next six years.

However, media reports cited by La Provence claim that Aguerd’s agreement includes a release clause set at around €15m. That figure is significantly lower than the fee Marseille paid West Ham United to sign him, potentially making him more attainable for interested clubs.

The existence of such a clause would give any suitor a clear route to open talks, while also putting pressure on Marseille to decide whether to keep a player they invested heavily in or consider selling for a reduced sum.

For now, Aguerd remains an Olympique de Marseille player, but as interest from the Gulf grows and speculation intensifies over his contract terms, his future in European football appears increasingly uncertain.
