Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi responds to Sofyan Amrabat dispute

Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi has responded to Sofyan Amrabat’s decision to stop playing for the national team while he remains in charge.

Amrabat announced on Instagram on 8 September that he no longer wished to represent Morocco under Ouahbi. The Ajax midfielder said he would only make himself available again once the Moroccan Football Federation had appointed a new head coach.

The midfielder did not explain his reasons, saying he wanted to show “respect for the people concerned”. His decision has since prompted a response from Ouahbi.

Speaking at his latest news conference, Ouahbi offered his explanation for Amrabat’s stance and rejected the idea that there had been a personal disagreement between them.

“It is not easy to have a status like his and to have to accept that younger players should be given more playing time. There is no conflict between Amrabat and me, nor with the staff. In football, the past deserves respect, but does not grant any privileges,” said Ouahbi.

As a result, Amrabat has not been included in Ouahbi’s squad for the next international break.

Ajax player Abdellah Ouazane, meanwhile, has received his first call-up to the Morocco squad.
