Malian FA appoints Anthony Da Silva as new Eagles head coach

The Malian Football Federation has confirmed the appointment of Franco-Portuguese tactician Anthony Da Silva as the new head coach of the Mali national team, ushering in a fresh chapter for the Eagles ahead of a crucial international cycle.

The 45-year-old arrives with a clear brief: to restore competitive stability, drive qualification for upcoming major tournaments, and reshape the tactical identity of a squad widely regarded for its untapped potential.

Federation officials are banking on his blend of European experience and familiarity with African football to deliver immediate impact.

Da Silva, widely known as “Tony,” built his reputation as a disciplined and intelligent defender during his playing career.

Trained at Paris Saint-Germain, he went on to become a cult figure at Romanian side CFR Cluj, where he lifted multiple league titles and established himself as a reliable defensive leader.

Since retiring in 2015, he has steadily progressed in coaching, holding a UEFA Pro Licence and gaining experience across Europe. His managerial journey has included spells in Portugal and Romania with Politehnica Iași, where he developed a reputation for organisation, structure, and attention to detail.

The Malian job had been under consideration for several candidates. Florent Ibenge was reportedly in line to take over following the resignation of Tom Saintfiet, who stepped down from his role, before ultimately choosing to remain with Azam FC which left the Mali FC leadership frustrated.

Da Silva’s appointment also reflects Mali’s growing emphasis on coaches with cross-continental experience. Between 2019 and 2022, he served as a video analyst with the Cameroon national football team, giving him valuable insight into African international football dynamics.

His arrival is expected to bring a more structured tactical framework and stronger defensive organisation, while also integrating the country’s emerging talents into a more cohesive system.

However, expectations are high and immediate results will be demanded. Mali supporters, long eager for consistency on the international stage, will be watching closely as Da Silva begins the task of uniting the squad and translating potential into performance.
