Mali FA frustrated after Florent Ibenge withdraws from coaching role
The Malian Football Federation (FEMAFOOT) has reportedly expressed strong frustration following Florent Ibenge’s decision to turn down the national team head coach position, citing family reasons at a late stage in the recruitment process.
The experienced Congolese tactician had emerged as the leading candidate to take charge of the Eagles after the departure of former head coach Tom Saintfiet.
Ibenge was understood to have progressed through several stages of the selection process and was eventually identified as the federation’s preferred choice.
However, the situation took an unexpected turn when he informed officials that he would not be able to accept the role due to personal and family-related circumstances.
According to reports within the federation, some officials are disappointed with the timing of the decision, arguing that such concerns should have been raised earlier.
They believe the process had already reached an advanced stage, with discussions progressing significantly before Ibenge’s withdrawal.
The delay, officials feel, has cost the federation valuable time in its search for a new national team coach, potentially limiting their options as preparations continue.
With Ibenge now out of contention, Mali are expected to refocus their efforts on alternative candidates as they look to stabilise their technical bench ahead of upcoming international commitments.
