Luca Zidane hails team effort after Algeria shock Netherlands
Algerian goalkeeper Luca Zidane has credited Algeria’s collective effort rather than his own impressive display after helping the Fennecs secure a memorable 1-0 victory over the Netherlands in Rotterdam.
Zidane played a decisive role in the win, producing several important saves to deny the Dutch attack and keep Algeria in the contest before Anis Hadj Moussa’s late goal settled the encounter.
Yet the goalkeeper was quick to shift the focus away from his individual contribution and towards the performance of the entire team.
“We should rather highlight the team’s performance. I think we played a very good match against a very good team.
We knew they were going to make things difficult for us, but we knew how to wait for the moment to hurt them. We are very happy with this victory, which is important for confidence,” Zidane said in the mixed zone.
Against one of Europe’s most respected footballing nations, Algeria delivered a disciplined and organised performance.
The Fennecs showed resilience throughout the match, remaining compact and patient before eventually finding the breakthrough in the closing stages through Hadj Moussa.
The result provides a significant boost for Algeria as preparations continue for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Defeating a high-calibre opponent is expected to strengthen belief within the squad ahead of the global tournament.
For Zidane, the approaching World Cup already carries special meaning. The goalkeeper spoke openly about the pride he feels at the prospect of representing Algeria on football’s biggest stage, describing participation in the competition as the pinnacle of a player’s career.
“Playing in a World Cup is the greatest achievement for a footballer. And being able to represent your country, with your family and the entire Algerian people behind you, is truly a source of pride.”
The 26-year-old also provided an update on the facial injury that has forced him to continue wearing a protective mask. While the issue remains visible, Zidane indicated that his recovery is progressing positively as he prepares for the tournament.
“I’m feeling better and better and I’m preparing well for the World Cup.”
His comments reflected both confidence and excitement as Algeria continues its build-up to the 2026 World Cup, with the goalkeeper determined to be ready for the challenge of representing the North African nation on the world’s biggest football stage.
