Leon Guwara linked with return to Energie Cottbus
Leon Guwara, a Gambian-German left-back who is currently without a club, is being linked with a return to Energie Cottbus in Germany’s 2. Bundesliga.
The 30-year-old left Cottbus on 1 July 2026 after one season with the club. He had joined from FC Ingolstadt on 15 July 2025, but is now listed as unattached as speculation grows over a possible move back.
Guwara has extensive experience in Germany’s professional divisions, with 63 appearances in the 2. Bundesliga and 59 in the 3. Liga. He also made 18 Bundesliga appearances during his career, while spending time in the Eredivisie with Utrecht and VVV-Venlo.
His most recent spell before joining Cottbus came at Ingolstadt, where he won the Bavarian Cup in the 2023-24 season. Guwara’s career also includes periods with Werder Bremen, Darmstadt 98 and 1. FC Kaiserslautern, as well as development through the youth system at 1. FC Koln.
There is no indication that a deal has been completed, and the reported move remains a rumour. Guwara’s current status is that of a clubless player, with his market value listed at €225,000.
