Manchester United eye Fulham defender Calvin Bassey for January move

Manchester United are considering a move for Fulham defender Calvin Bassey during the next winter transfer window.

The Nigeria international is under contract at Fulham, but reports suggest he could be persuaded by an approach from the Red Devils.

According to former Manchester United scout Mick Brown, Bassey’s profile matches the requirements of manager Michael Carrick. The club are looking to strengthen the left side of their defence, an area where Carrick is believed to feel his squad lacks sufficient depth.

Bassey’s versatility is regarded as one of his main attractions. The 26-year-old can operate as a central defender or at left-back, offering Manchester United an option who could cover more than one position.

The defender joined Fulham from Ajax Amsterdam in 2023 and has gradually established himself as an important member of the London club’s squad. His physical strength, power and technical ability have reportedly attracted interest from Manchester United’s hierarchy.

However, any deal is likely to prove difficult. Fulham have no intention of allowing Bassey to leave and remain in a strong position because his current contract runs until June 2027. The agreement also includes an option for a further year.

Manchester United would therefore need to convince both Fulham and the player if they decide to make a formal approach in January. Bassey’s estimated market value is 28 million euros.

It remains uncertain whether the interest will develop into concrete action when the transfer window opens. Fulham will shortly play their 10th league match of the season against Newcastle.
