Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has expressed confidence in his squad’s January signings, insisting that the new arrivals will quickly integrate into his tactical system despite the high-pressure environment surrounding the Soweto Derby.
The South African giants, who have struggled for consistency this season, strengthened their squad with the additions of Thabo Cele, Tashreeq Morris, and Glody Makabi Lilepo.
However, their availability for the much-anticipated clash against Orlando Pirates remains uncertain due to suspensions and administrative delays.
Squad Availability Concerns
Tashreeq Morris is set to miss the derby after receiving a red card while playing for SuperSport United, ruling him out of contention for his new club.
Meanwhile, Glody Makabi Lilepo may also be unavailable, as his work permit has yet to be processed in time for the fixture.
Thabo Cele, however, is expected to be available for selection, as his registration does not require a work permit.
His presence could provide a much-needed boost to Chiefs, who are aiming to challenge their arch-rivals despite ongoing team adjustments.
Nabi’s Trust in New Arrivals
Despite the challenges, Nabi remains optimistic about the club’s latest acquisitions, highlighting the extensive scouting process that led to their recruitment.
“We are confident that we have made a smart recruitment by avoiding the big media names.
We have studied these players, we know what they can bring and how they can fit into our game model. We hope they will adapt quickly,” said the Tunisian coach.
Nabi has also emphasised that building a competitive squad is a gradual process, requiring patience and persistence.
However, the immediate pressure of Saturday’s derby—one of the most iconic fixtures in South African football—adds urgency to the team’s need for quick adaptation.
Orlando Pirates Hold the Advantage
With Orlando Pirates in strong form and having won the last three Soweto Derbies, many believe they hold the upper hand going into the fixture.
The match has been sold out for weeks, highlighting its significance for both sets of supporters.
Nabi acknowledged the magnitude of the encounter, stating: “It is a crucial match for all of us, technical staff, players, management, and fans.
We are doing everything possible to be ready. The atmosphere of the derby is unique, but every match is prepared with rigour.”
While he recognises that his squad is still a work in progress, the Chiefs boss is determined to see his players rise to the occasion and deliver a performance worthy of the derby’s historic importance.
