Jonas Urbig set for Germany debut against Serbia at Bayern’s Allianz Arena

Jonas Urbig will make his Germany debut against Serbia in the UEFA Nations League at Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena after being told he will start by head coach Jurgen Klopp.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper was informed of his selection during Germany’s final training session and said he was delighted to have been given the opportunity.

“I found out today in training and was of course very happy,” Urbig said at his pre-match press conference.

“I’m delighted to have the opportunity to walk out onto the pitch in my stadium tomorrow.”

The match will be Urbig’s first senior international appearance and will take place in front of supporters who regularly watch him play for Bayern. He has remained focused on his immediate responsibilities despite competition for the No.1 position at the club, where he has played alongside Germany legend Manuel Neuer.

Urbig said discussions about his long-term prospects had not affected his preparation and insisted his attention was on improving each day.

“This whole number one thing isn’t something I’m concerned with,” he said. “My focus is on reaching my limit every day and pushing beyond it.

“Everything else will fall into place over time. I’ve been given a lot of confidence at FC Bayern. I’ve been given the confidence here.”

The goalkeeper is now concentrating on his first Germany appearance and on helping Klopp secure his first victory with the national team.

“I’ll make my debut tomorrow. Everything else is something for the future. I’m living in the here and now,” Urbig said.

Germany face Serbia in Munich on Thursday in the UEFA Nations League. Urbig said the occasion would be particularly significant because of the venue and his connection with Bayern.

“It’s very special. I will do everything I can to ensure that we, as a team, get our first win under Jurgen Klopp,” he added.

After the international fixture, Bayern’s next Bundesliga match is away to Augsburg at the WWK Arena on Saturday, October 10.
