Fares Ghedjemis scores first Serie A goal as Frosinone secure crucial win over Torino
Algerian winger Fares Ghedjemis scored his first Serie A goal of the season as Frosinone defeated Torino 2-0 to strengthen their position in the Italian top-flight standings.
The 24-year-old delivered an impressive performance on Sunday, 1 November, finding the net in the 48th minute before Giacomo Calo added a second goal in stoppage time to complete the victory at the Benito Stirpe Stadium.
The result extended Frosinone’s winning run at home to five consecutive league matches and lifted the newly promoted side to sixth place with 20 points from their opening 10 fixtures.
For Ghedjemis, the goal represented another important moment in an increasingly impressive campaign, particularly after his outstanding contribution in the previous league encounter against Atalanta.
Ghedjemis breaks Torino resistance after the break
Frosinone started the contest with attacking intent, creating several promising opportunities through Antonio Raimondo and Ghedjemis during the opening 45 minutes.
However, their early momentum was interrupted when Raimondo suffered an ankle injury following a challenge involving Moroccan international Zakaria Aboukhlal.
The injury forced head coach Massimiliano Alvini to make an early adjustment, with Daniel Bîrligea replacing the injured forward in the 30th minute.
Despite their attacking efforts, Frosinone were unable to find a breakthrough before the interval, with both sides heading into the dressing rooms with the score still goalless.
The deadlock was finally broken three minutes into the second half when Ghedjemis produced the decisive moment.
Giorgi Kvernadze drove forward down the left flank before delivering the ball into the penalty area for the Algerian winger.
Ghedjemis controlled the opportunity and struck with his left foot, with a deflection taking the ball beyond Torino goalkeeper Lucas Perri.
The goal gave Frosinone a deserved 1-0 advantage and rewarded their sustained attacking pressure.
Ghedjemis came close to extending the lead in the 63rd minute, but Torino defenders Ardian Ismajli and Saul Coco combined to prevent him from scoring again.
The Algerian continued to threaten the visitors’ defence and also produced a curling effort that narrowly missed the target, coming close to completing a memorable individual performance.
Torino’s hopes of recovering a point were eventually ended in the 93rd minute when Calo found the net with an accurate strike from the edge of the penalty area to make it 2-0.
Ghedjemis builds on impressive display against Atalanta
The latest performance further underlined Ghedjemis’ growing importance to Frosinone after an encouraging return to form.
Just one week earlier, the Algerian international had produced an exceptional display in the club’s entertaining 4-4 draw against Atalanta, providing three assists in the encounter.
That performance saw him become the first Frosinone player to register more than two assists in a single Serie A match.
His contribution against Torino was another significant step, as he followed his creative performance with a goal of his own.
Ghedjemis had previously established himself as an important attacking figure during Frosinone’s promotion campaign last season, scoring 15 goals and providing three assists in Serie B.
His impressive numbers attracted interest from several European clubs, including Monaco, during the transfer window.
However, Frosinone managed to retain the winger and subsequently secured his future with a contract extension running until June 2030.
His recent performances against Atalanta and Torino have further demonstrated the attacking qualities that make him an important part of Alvini’s plans.
Belghali suffers defeat in Algerian battle against Ghedjemis
The encounter also provided an opportunity for another Algerian international, Rafik Belghali, who started for Torino.
The 24-year-old right-back has made an encouraging impression since joining the Turin-based club from Hellas Verona during the summer transfer window.
Before the weekend’s fixtures, both Belghali and Ghedjemis had featured among Serie A’s leading players for passes per 90 minutes, according to Foot Africa’s analysis of African footballers in the Italian league.
However, it was Ghedjemis who enjoyed the more successful afternoon, scoring the opening goal and helping his team collect all three points.
Belghali, meanwhile, was unable to prevent Torino from suffering another defeat and was replaced in the 71st minute.
Aboukhlal also started for the visitors but was withdrawn at half-time following his involvement in the opening period.
The meeting brought together three North African players, although their individual contributions and fortunes differed considerably by the final whistle.
Frosinone move sixth as Torino suffer another setback
The victory represents another positive result for Frosinone, whose impressive beginning to the 2026/27 campaign has continued following their return to Serie A.
With 20 points from 10 matches, Alvini’s side occupy sixth position, just one point behind fifth-placed AC Milan.
Their home record has been particularly impressive, having won all five of their league matches at the Benito Stirpe Stadium this season.
Torino, on the other hand, have suffered another setback after losing 3-1 to Como in midweek.
Ignazio Abate’s side remain on 13 points after 10 matches, having now recorded consecutive defeats.
For Frosinone, Ghedjemis’ growing influence offers another encouraging development as they continue their campaign, while his latest goal provides further evidence of the Algerian’s importance to the newly promoted side.
