Hossam Hassan reaches 75-goal milestone as Egyptian Premier League scoring race tightens
Hossam Hassan scored his second goal of the season for Al Ittihad Alexandria in their Egyptian Premier League match against Abu Qir Fertilizers, taking his career league total to 75 goals and moving him level at the top of the scoring charts with five other players.
The 33-year-old forward found the net during the third round of the competition at Alexandria Stadium. His strike was his second of the campaign and ensured he has scored both of Al Ittihad Alexandria’s goals so far this season.
Hossam Hassan had already scored in the club’s second-round fixture against Ceramica Cleopatra, although Al Ittihad Alexandria were beaten 3-1 in that match. Their opening game of the campaign ended in a goalless draw against Zamalek.
His latest goal leaves him joint top of the Egyptian Premier League scoring standings with two goals. The other players on the same tally are Hossam Ashraf of Zamalek, Mahmoud Mamdouh of Modern Sport, Ahmed Balhaj of Ceramica Cleopatra, Oday Fakhouri of Pyramids and Mauly Wayo of El Qanah.
The goal also carried particular significance for Hossam Hassan, who has now scored 75 times in the Egyptian Premier League during his career. That makes him the active player in the competition closest to reaching the 100-goal mark.
The majority of his league goals came during his time with Smouha, for whom he scored 66 times. He has also scored twice for each of Modern Sport, Al Ahly, El Dakhleya and Al Ittihad Alexandria, while one of his league goals came with Tala’ea El Gaish.
Hossam Hassan joined Al Ittihad Alexandria at the start of this season after ending his contract with Modern Sport. His move followed a career that has taken him through several clubs in Egypt and Libya.
He began his football development in the Zamalek youth system before going on to play for Tala’ea El Gaish, El Dakhleya, Smouha, Ahly Tripoli, Al Ahly and Modern Sport.
His latest achievement adds to a long-running record of consistent scoring in the Egyptian top flight. With only two goals separating the leading group at this early stage of the season, Hossam Hassan’s 75-goal milestone places him among the most experienced and productive active forwards in the competition.
