Egypt secured third place at the Africa Cup of Nations after thrashing Algeria 8-0 in the tournament’s play-off match.

The result confirmed a bronze-medal finish for Egypt’s futsal team at the competition in Morocco.

Morocco, the host nation, were due to face Angola in the final later in the day.

Egypt began the tournament with emphatic victories over Tanzania and Mozambique, beating them 8-0 and 4-0 respectively. They then lost 2-1 to Angola to finish second in their group.

That defeat set up a semi-final against Morocco, where Egypt suffered a heavy 6-0 loss.

They responded strongly in the third-place match, producing their biggest win of the knockout stage to beat Algeria 8-0.

Egypt have previously won the Africa Cup of Nations futsal title three times, in 1996, 2000 and 2004.
