Omar Colley, the captain of The Gambia’s national football team, will not feature in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) 2025 qualifier against Comoros on Wednesday, September 4, 2024. The defender is currently finalizing details of his transfer from Besiktas to the Greek side PAOK and remains in Europe to complete the move.
With only one player absent, coach Johnathan McKinstry has a largely complete squad at his disposal for the crucial match.
The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) has confirmed that Colley’s absence is only temporary.
The GFF stated, “The only absentee is captain Omar Colley, who will join the team on Thursday, before the match against Tunisia, to finalize his transfer to PAOK.”
The Gambia Scorpions have gathered a significant portion of their squad in Morocco, preparing for their opening match of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers.
While Colley is tied up with his transfer, other players, including Abdoulie Ceesay and Joseph Ceesay, have joined the camp in Casablanca.
The match against Comoros will be held in El Jadida, Morocco, due to the unavailability of a suitable venue in Comoros.
Kick-off is scheduled for 15:00 GMT. This fixture marks the beginning of the qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Nations 2025, with Gambia eager to start their campaign on a strong note.
Colley’s expected arrival in Morocco on Thursday will ensure his participation in the subsequent match against Tunisia.
His leadership and defensive prowess are anticipated to be crucial as The Gambia aims to secure a strong position in the group stages of the tournament.
As the qualifiers progress, the Gambia Scorpions will look to integrate their captain seamlessly into the squad and build momentum for their campaign.
