Malian legend Frédéric Kanouté predicts difficult final for Aston Villa against Freiburg
Former Malian striker Frédéric Kanouté believes Aston Villa enter the Europa League final as slight favourites, although he expects SC Freiburg to provide a major challenge in the battle for the trophy.
The former Sevilla forward, who won the UEFA Cup during his playing career, shared his thoughts ahead of the final and pointed to Aston Villa’s quality and experience as important factors going into the match.
Speaking to Footy-Africa, Kanouté said the English side had consistently demonstrated their strength throughout the European campaign.
“Aston Villa have shown throughout this campaign that they are among the best teams in Europe. Their squad is well-balanced, they have experience in key areas, and players capable of turning a game around in crucial moments. I think they have a slight advantage going into this match.”
Despite identifying Villa as favourites, the former Mali international warned against dismissing Freiburg’s chances, insisting the German side had fully earned their place in the final.
“The team is organized, hardworking, and mentally very strong. Teams of this caliber are always dangerous in cup finals because they fight for every ball and never lose hope.”
Kanouté drew from his own experience in European competitions to underline how unpredictable continental finals can become once the match begins.
During his successful spell with Sevilla FC, the former striker established himself as one of Africa’s most respected forwards and enjoyed several memorable nights in European football.
He believes Freiburg possess the mentality and resilience needed to make life difficult for Aston Villa despite the difference in expectations surrounding both clubs.
“In a final, history and current form sometimes cease to matter once the final whistle blows. I remember many difficult evenings in the UEFA Cup with Sevilla. Freiburg will give Aston Villa a tough time in their quest to win the trophy.”
Kanouté also predicted a closely contested encounter that could ultimately be settled by a decisive moment of quality in attack.
“I expect a very close match, which could be decided by a single moment of brilliance. Aston Villa might have a bit more creativity in attack, and that could make the difference. But Freiburg will undoubtedly put up a fierce fight.”
The final is expected to pit Aston Villa’s attacking creativity against Freiburg’s disciplined and determined style, with Kanouté convinced that neither side will have an easy path to lifting the trophy.
