Orlando Pirates teenager Mpho Padime in line for another chance against Kruger United

Orlando Pirates midfielder Mpho Padime could make a second appearance for the first team after being included in the squad travelling to Mbombela for Tuesday night’s Betway Premiership meeting with Kruger United.

The Buccaneers posted a video of their journey to Mbombela Stadium on their official X account, with the 19-year-old visible among the players making the trip.

Padime, who is affectionately known as ‘Phopho’, made his long-awaited senior debut in Pirates’ 3-0 victory over Sekhukhune United in the second leg of their MTN8 semi-final at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday.

The result sent Pirates through to the MTN8 final with a 4-0 aggregate win over Babina Noko. Padime was introduced late in the match, but still managed to provide supporters with a glimpse of his ability.

The teenager showed composure and flair when controlling the ball before helping to create the move that ended with Kamogelo Sebelebele scoring Pirates’ third goal. His contribution made an immediate impression despite the limited amount of time he spent on the pitch.

The arrival of one of the club’s most promising young players was greeted by loud cheers from the home supporters, who appeared to enjoy what they saw from Padime during his brief appearance.

Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou subsequently spoke positively about giving young players the freedom to express themselves, particularly when a match is under control and the team is in a comfortable position.

Padime’s inclusion in the travelling party for the trip to Mbombela now gives him another opportunity to feature for the senior side. Whether he is selected to play against Kruger United remains uncertain, but his involvement in the squad will raise expectations among Pirates supporters.

His first appearance at the Orlando Amstel Arena offered only a short introduction to his game, yet his involvement in the build-up to Sebelebele’s goal ensured it was a memorable one. A further run-out on Tuesday would allow ‘Phopho’ to show more of what he can offer in the famous black and white jersey.

The midfielder’s latest selection also signals that he remains part of Ouaddou’s plans as Pirates prepare for another Betway Premiership fixture, following their successful progression in the MTN8.

For now, supporters will have to wait to discover whether Padime is given another opportunity. However, after the excitement generated by his debut, interest in one of Orlando Pirates’ newest first-team faces is likely to continue growing.
