Hamza Ighmane ruled out of Champions League opening stages

Moroccan international Hamza Ighmane will miss Lille’s Champions League group stage campaign as he continues his recovery from a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained earlier this year.

Lille coach Davide Ancelotti confirmed that the 23-year-old striker will not be available for the club’s opening phase of the competition while addressing the media ahead of their first Champions League match against Spanish side Real Betis on Tuesday.

Ighmane has been sidelined since suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the Africa Cup of Nations final on January 18 in Morocco.

The forward was introduced in the 98th minute of the final but was unable to complete the encounter after picking up the serious injury towards the end of the first period of extra time.

His latest setback came after a difficult period with fitness problems, having also suffered a muscle injury during the 15th round of the French league in December 2025, shortly before the start of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The injury ruled him out for a significant period and has delayed his return to competitive action, with Lille now confirming that they will have to navigate the Champions League group stage without one of their attacking options.

Veteran French striker Olivier Giroud is expected to play a key role in Ighmane’s absence, with the experienced forward enjoying an encouraging start to the new campaign.

Giroud has rediscovered his form in the opening weeks of the season and will be expected to provide Lille with leadership and experience as they embark on another European campaign.

Lille have also made a strong start to their domestic season, collecting seven points from a possible nine in their opening three league matches.

Victories over Toulouse and Angers have helped the French side establish early momentum ahead of their return to Champions League football.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s clash, Ancelotti acknowledged the challenge his side will face against Real Betis and warned his players against underestimating the Spanish opposition.

The Lille manager highlighted the experience within the Betis squad, particularly their familiarity with competing at the highest level of European football.

“Many of them have previously won the Champions League. Betis is a well-organized team, always difficult to play against, and they have a good defensive structure,” Ancelotti said.

Lille will therefore have to begin their European campaign without Ighmane, but there remains hope that the Moroccan forward could still feature later in the competition.

Should the French club progress beyond the group stage and reach either the play-offs or the Round of 16, Ighmane could potentially return in time to make his Champions League debut during the knockout stages.

His recovery will continue to be closely monitored by both Lille and the Moroccan national team, with the striker regarded as one of the country’s promising attacking talents.

For now, however, Ighmane’s focus remains firmly on completing his rehabilitation and returning to full fitness, while Lille prepare to take on the challenge of competing on both the domestic and European fronts without him during the opening stages of the season.

The 23-year-old will be hoping that his teammates can progress deep enough into the Champions League to give him the opportunity to make his return on one of European football’s biggest stages.
