Barcelona have the quality to win the Champions League, says Hansi Flick

Hansi Flick believes Barcelona have the quality required to win the Champions League this season, although the manager accepts they face a long journey to the final.

Barcelona begin their campaign for a first Champions League title since 2015 when they host Feyenoord at Camp Nou on Wednesday. Flick also discussed how he intends to manage a squad containing a large number of players capable of making an impact.

“We have a team capable of winning the Champions League, but the journey is long,” Flick said.

“In the end, all the big clubs dream of that because it is the greatest competition. We have the quality to win it, but we have to prove it. We want to do that.”

Barcelona are also targeting a third consecutive La Liga title.

“One of our goals is to win the league for the third time in a row,” added Flick.

The German said the depth of his squad could create difficult decisions, but stressed that every player must continue to contribute even if they are not selected regularly.

“There are a lot of players with experience. The most important thing is the team. We have to give everything we have, and do that every day. We have won four matches, and that is not easy.”

“Some players may not be happy with their situation, but if you want to play, you have to prove yourself.”

Flick said the level Barcelona have shown in matches has been reflected in their training work, while acknowledging the challenge of maintaining a positive atmosphere among a squad competing for places.

“Our level in matches is the same as what I see in training. We have to maintain this level.”

“It will not be easy to maintain a good atmosphere inside the team, but that is our job. I see all the players every day and assess what could be the best starting line-up. The players who play less must remain positive and help the rest of the team.”

Barcelona’s squad includes several players who Flick believes could contend for the Ballon d’Or.

“Of course, we have many great players, and I would be very happy if any of them won the Ballon d’Or,” he said.

Flick also provided an update on Frenkie de Jong, who is recovering from injury and could return after the next international break.

“Frenkie de Jong is a great player and extremely talented. He is recovering well from his injury and is following the plan that has been set out. I hope he returns soon, perhaps after the international break.”

The manager praised Anthony Gordon for his contribution in both halves of the pitch and said he expected the forward’s goals to follow.

“I am happy with Anthony Gordon’s performance, both defensively and offensively. The goals will come; he is performing well.”

Lamine Yamal was also singled out for his influence and development. Flick said the Spain international can decide matches on his own and is enjoying his increased leadership responsibilities.

“Lamine Yamal is capable of deciding matches by himself, and he enjoys improving day by day.”

“He also enjoys his new role as a captain. That is important for him to reach his highest level.”

Under the Champions League league-phase format, Barcelona will face eight different opponents, with four matches at Camp Nou and four away from home.

Their fixtures are Feyenoord at Camp Nou, Galatasaray at Rams Park, Manchester City at Camp Nou, Paris Saint-Germain at Parc des Princes, Aston Villa at Camp Nou, Sporting CP at Estadio Jose Alvalade, Como at Camp Nou and Sabah FC at Bank Respublika Arena.
