Dominik Szoboszlai says Liverpool can achieve ‘everything we want’ after Atletico comeback

Dominik Szoboszlai says Liverpool have the quality to achieve all their ambitions this season after returning to action in their 2-1 Champions League victory over Atletico de Madrid.

The midfielder was pleased to be back involved as Liverpool recovered from conceding the opening goal in their first league-phase match of the competition. The Reds eventually overturned the deficit to secure a 2-1 win over the Spanish side.

“I’m very happy to be back. These nights are always special. After a setback at the beginning, we managed to come back and played a good match,” Szoboszlai told TNT Sports.

He also welcomed the result and his return to the scoresheet.

“I’m happy with the result, and also happy to finally score my goal again. The match was full of ups and downs. Atletico de Madrid are a good team, and I think we have a good team too. We gave everything we had,” he said.

Szoboszlai was also asked about Ronald Araujo.

“I’m happy for him as well. You have to ask him if he meant me, and I thank him again too,” said the Liverpool midfielder.

Liverpool’s victory came on an important European occasion, and Szoboszlai made clear how much he values competing in the Champions League while wearing the club’s shirt.

“I love playing in every competition, especially when I wear the Liverpool shirt. I hope we can keep progressing and that we can achieve something special this year,” he said.

The Hungary international believes Liverpool’s targets are within reach, although he stressed that the squad must continue to work hard.

“We can achieve everything we want, so we have to work hard for it, and hopefully everything goes as well as possible,” Szoboszlai added.

He said Liverpool would now focus on each match individually, with recovery and preparations for their next domestic fixture taking priority.

“We have to take the matches one by one. Now we will have a period to recover and prepare for the match against Fulham. We are ready to come back again,” he said.

Liverpool’s next Champions League fixture is against Austrian club LASK on 14 October. Atletico de Madrid will face Manchester United on 13 October in the same round of the competition.

The Champions League league phase features 36 teams, with each side playing eight matches.

The top eight clubs in the table will qualify directly for the last 16. Teams finishing from ninth to 16th will instead enter a play-off round for a place in the knockout stage.
